Exploring the Outer Hebrides by motorhome is a holiday like no other. Thanks to an excellent network of Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services, the remote islands of Barra, the Uists, Harris and Lewis are all easily accessible. You will delight in the changing landscapes, remote beaches and warm Hebridean welcome.

Your island adventure starts when you take the scenic drive to Oban along the A82/A83, skirting Loch Lomond and stopping off in the delightful historic town of Inveraray en route.

Oban is the bustling Gateway to the Isles and boasts an excellent range of shops and an impressive distillery, so make sure you take some time to explore the town before catching the ferry to Barra. 

Only five miles across by eight miles long,  Barra is a compact paradise. The secluded bay in the main harbour town of Castlebay shelters the majestic Kisimul Castle whilst the airport is one of the most unusual in the world, with flights landing on the beach at Cockle Strand in-between tides. 

Travel on to Eriskay and sample the story behind 'Whisky Galore', when the islanders retrieved a cargo of 250,000 bottles of whisky from the shipwrecked SS Politician. From here, you have a jaw dropping drive north by road over spectacular causeways through the stunning scenery of the Uists and Benbecula.

Golfers will enjoy playing the acclaimed Askernish golf course in South Uist, designed by Old Tom Morris and laced with sand dunes and tees overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The west coast of the island is almost a continual beach stretching for more than 12 miles and a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.

Head on through Benbecula and North Uist and soak up the stunning blend of beaches, machair lands and freshwater lochs interrupted by rolling moorland hills. The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and bird watchers (visit the RSPB Nature Reserve at Balranald).

Take the short ferry crossing from Berneray to Harris, described as the 'high heart of the Hebrides'. This dramatic island of contrasting landscapes boasts some of the best beaches in the world, including Luskentyre, Seilebost and Scarista. 

As you head to Lewis, the mountains of North Harris give way to rolling moorland and small inland lochs. Lewis is the largest and most northerly island in the Outer Hebrides and the capital, Stornoway, is by far the largest settlement in the island chain. Steeped in history and culture, make sure you visit the legendary Callanish Standing Stones, the Blackhouse and the Carloway Broch to get an insight into what life on Lewis used to be like. 

As you depart Stornoway on the ferry to Ullapool, your motorhome will have been your comfortable companion during your Hebridean adventure, so sit back and enjoy the scenic drive back to Glasgow. You'll have time to reflect on your holiday and start planning a return trip!
