How to Stay Connected on the Road – Tech Tips for Motorhome Travellers Just because you're travelling Scotland by motorhome doesn’t mean you have to go completely off the grid.

Just because you're travelling Scotland by motorhome doesn’t mean you have to go completely off the grid - unless you want to! Whether you're working remotely, keeping in touch with family, or just want to stream a film on a rainy evening, it’s entirely possible to stay connected on the road. Here’s how to manage Wi-Fi, charging, and digital essentials while you explore the wild beauty of Scotland.

1. Wi-Fi Options for Motorhome Travellers

While many people assume that motorhome travel means disconnecting entirely, the reality is far more flexible. Most established campsites in Scotland now offer on-site Wi-Fi - ideal for checking email, booking your next pitch or uploading a few photos.

Another option is using your mobile data. Scotland’s 4G coverage is improving all the time, particularly across the central belt, west coast, and larger towns. It’s a great way to stay online when you’re between campsites or driving through scenic areas.

If you're relying heavily on Wi-Fi, a portable mobile hotspot (also called a MiFi device) can provide a secure and consistent connection for multiple devices - handy if you're travelling as a family.

2. Charging Devices in Your Motorhome

Every Go Explore vehicle is fitted with USB charging ports and standard plug sockets, so keeping your phone, camera or tablet powered up is easy.

Top tips for staying charged:

  • Bring your USB cables and a power bank for added flexibility

  • Only use high-powered devices (like laptops or air fryers) when plugged into a mains hook-up at a campsite

  • Consider an in-vehicle car charger for use while driving

  • Keep tech organised with a dedicated “charging bag” or caddy

3. Download Before You Drive

Signal can be patchy in remote areas, so downloading key content before your trip is a smart move. We recommend:

  • Google Maps offline for navigation

  • Spotify playlists or podcasts for the road

  • Netflix or YouTube videos for evening downtime

  • Digital travel guides or campsite directories

You’ll thank yourself later when you’re tucked into a peaceful lochside pitch without a bar of signal  - and still able to enjoy your evening film.

4. Using Tech for Travel

There are lots of helpful apps that can make your journey smoother:

  • Park4Night  - Find campsite options, parking spots and service areas

  • Google Maps or Waze  - Reliable for navigation

  • ViewRanger or AllTrails  - Great for local hikes and viewpoints

  • The Met Office app  - To keep tabs on Scotland’s famously unpredictable weather

5. Balance Digital and Disconnecting

The freedom of a motorhome holiday lies in choice. For many, it’s about stepping back from the noise and enjoying the simple things — a view, a walk, a cup of tea with no emails in sight.

But for others, it’s about staying connected to friends, family, or work while still having that sense of freedom and flexibility.

At Go Explore, we believe you should have both options -  and our motorhomes are equipped to help you do exactly that.
