Do You Need to Book Campsites in Advance for Your Motorhome Holiday in Scotland? Planning a motorhome trip around Scotland? One of the most common questions we hear is: "Do I need to book my campsites ahead of time?" The answer depends on when and where you're travelling — but if you're hoping for a smooth, stress-free experience, a little forward planning can go a long way.

Planning a motorhome trip around Scotland? One of the most common questions we hear is: "Do I need to book my campsites ahead of time?" The answer depends on when and where you're travelling — but if you're hoping for a smooth, stress-free experience, a little forward planning can go a long way.

When You Should Definitely Book Ahead
During peak travel times like July and August, it’s essential to book your campsites in advance — especially if you’re heading to popular spots like the NC500, Isle of Skye, or Loch Lomond. Many family-friendly and lochside campsites are in high demand during summer school holidays and UK bank holidays, and availability can be tight.

The same applies to Easter and Spring Bank Holidays in May. If you're hiring a motorhome during these times, booking ahead is strongly recommended.

When You Might Have More Flexibility
Travelling off-season (April, early June, September) gives you more freedom to be spontaneous. Some campsites will accept walk-ins or same-day bookings, particularly in quieter regions.

Still, even in shoulder seasons, it's wise to plan at least a rough itinerary and secure your first night or two in advance. That way, you can travel confidently without worrying about where you’ll stop for the night.

Why It’s Worth Booking Ahead Anyway
Even if you prefer the idea of a flexible route, there are good reasons to pre-book:

  • Peace of mind: You know exactly where you’re going and what to expect.

  • Facilities access: You’ll have guaranteed access to electric hook-ups, showers, toilets and laundry — especially helpful if travelling with kids.

  • Better locations: Pre-booked sites often give you the best pitches — loch views, extra space, or quieter surroundings.

  • Support local businesses: Campsite bookings help local communities thrive and reduce pressure on wild camping areas.

What About Wild Camping?
While the idea of wild camping may sound appealing, it's not always appropriate or legal for motorhomes. In fact, most local councils now actively discourage overnighting in unauthorised laybys, beaches or private land.

At Go Explore, we always recommend staying at approved campsites or permitted overnight areas (e.g. designated motorhome stopovers or ‘Aires’). This ensures you’re travelling responsibly and supporting local communities along the way.

Tips for Finding & Booking Campsites

  • Use apps like Park4Night, Campercontact or Searchforsites to check real-time reviews and availability

  • Always check cancellation policies, especially if your plans may change

  • Consider smaller, community-run sites — they’re often more personal and less busy

  • If you're travelling with pets or young children, check for dog-friendly facilities or play areas

A Flexible Approach
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule when it comes to booking campsites. Some travellers love the structure of a fixed route; others enjoy going where the road takes them. But for most motorhomers — especially first-timers — having at least a partial itinerary is the best balance of freedom and reassurance.

So, while you can wing it in quieter months, we always advise booking at least your key nights in advance — especially if travelling during busy periods.
